Set in the 18th century against the backdrop of the wild and rugged
Yorkshire countryside, Wuthering Heights is the story of crazed passion,
longing and revenge. The story begins when Mr. Lockwood, resident of an
old mansion Thrushcross Grange travels to another mansion, Wuthering
Heights, to meet his quiet, reserved and gloomy landlord Heathcliffe.
Mr. Lockwood is forced to spend the night in the Heights because of a
thunderstorm and is put up in a room which once belonged to a young
Catherine Earnshaw. The night turns out to be wild and stormy. The next
morning when Mr. Lockwood goes home, he asks his maid, Ellen Dean, about
Heathcliffe and Cathrine. It is the history of this couple that sets the
story into motion.
Young Heathcliffe was raised in the Heights where he was brought by the
master of the house, Earnshaw, from one of his trips. Heathcliffe
befriends and falls in love with the wild and passionate Catherine
Earnshaw who returns Heathcliffe's silent and brooding love. Their
star-crossed love coupled with the intense hatred of Cathy's brother
forms the core of the book. How Heathcliffe loses Cathy and his
agonizing longing for the only woman he could ever love is the haunting
climax of the novel.
I found the story of this book to be very fascinating. It had a very
expressive story line. Even though I only read the book once, it
captured my imagination from the beginning. The vocabulary was a bit
difficult to understand sometimes since this is a ‘Classic Novel’.
However, overall, the story was easy to understand. I would definitely
recommend this book for those of us that love tragic love stories from
time to time.
Emliy Jane Bronte was born to Patrick and Maria Bronte in 1818. She had
six siblings; four sisters, two of which passed away and one brother.
Emily was an English author and poet. Wuthering Heights was her only
novel. It was first published in 1847 by her sister Charlotte. The name
of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors in which most
of the story takes place. The narrative tells the tale of the
passionate, yet unfortunate, love between Heathcliff and Catherine
Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and
many around them. Emily Bronte passed away of illness in 1848 at age 30.
